Interview with Dr. Takashi Abe
Question: Hello Dr. Abe and thank you for this opportunity to interview you about Diet Amino®.
Dr. Abe: You're welcome! I am always happy to discuss about my researches.
Q: Before going into full detail, can you tell us in a nutshell what Diet Amino® is?
Dr. Abe: Certainly. Diet Amino® is a fat burning scientific formulation which I discovered from Japanese giant hornets. We underwent a long scientific research process before we manufactured and patented it as a weight loss supplement.
Q: What made you decide to study these insects?
Dr. Abe:About 25 years ago, after returning from NIH in the US, I began wondering about what type of research I could become involved in. It was during this time that nerve research was becoming more prevalent in the US. This intrigued me, so I decided to take up a post at RIKEN Institute in Japan. It was there I decided to study the actual venom of various poisonous insects. I chose giant hornets as the subject material for my research as there were no large types of hornets or wasps in western countries.
Q: Your work was even featured in National Geographic, isn't it?
Dr. Abe: That's right. National Geographic had a feature on the Japanese giant hornets and my discovery in their award winning film called "Hornets from Hell".

"...The (hornet) larvae are well fed, and in turn provide the adults with a powerful energy-boosting cocktail in their saliva.
It's called vespa amino acid mixture, or VAAM. Regular doses of VAAM from the larvae give giant hornets their incredible stamina and energy when pursuing prey, they can travel a range of 60 miles (96 kilometers) at speeds reaching 25 miles per hour.
The incredible effects of VAAM have not gone unnoticed in Japan: The country's latest sports drink is based on this "hornet power." Scientific Studies Show Diet Amino® Lowers Body Weight and Fat
Q: Can you tell us more about these scientific studies on Diet Amino®?
Dr. Abe:We conducted one trial where human subjects were given 3g of Diet Amino® every day for one month. These subjects didn't change their diet and exercise lifestyle. The results were that...
- subjects who took Diet Amino® showed a decrease in both body weight and fat at the end of the trial period
- subjects who took a placebo showed no decrease in both body weight and fat content at the end of the trial period. In fact they gained some weight after 30 days.
- subjects who took Diet Amino® showed a decrease in total cholesterol, high density cholesterol, phospholipids and other blood lipid indexes. Subjects who took a placebo showed no significant decrease in these blood lipid indexes.

Dr. Abe:I'd like to add that we've conducted well-designed double-blind clinical trials. Researchers agree that this the highest standard of scientific research.
Q: So what this study says is that if you take Diet Amino® for one month and don't change your eating and exercise habits -- you still can lose weight?
Dr. Abe:Yes, but I don't recommend a sedentary lifestyle! Diet Amino® should never be a substitute for moderating your food intake, eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly. Imagine how much more body fat you will lose when you eat right and exercise with Diet Amino®?
Discovering Diet Amino® from the Hornet's Liquid
Q: So can you tell us more about how you discovered Diet Amino® from hornets?
Dr. Abe:Well, it didn't start out in the right foot since I had a brush with death after being stung by a hornet! Because of this I started to carry out field observations to find out how I could catch hornets safely. It was during this stage that I began to notice some remarkable findings.
Q: What would they be?
Dr. Abe: That parent hornets fly between 70-80 kms per day hunting and bringing food to the nest to feed their young larvae.

Once they catch their feed, the adult hornets chew the small insects into a 'meatball'. They carry their feed, which by the way adds another gram to their weight, and they head back home to their nest where their young larvae wait.

Q: So the adult hornets don't eat these insect 'meatballs' themselves?
Dr. Abe:No. Instead, the hornets feed these 'meatballs' to their young larvae. Because adult hornets have constricted trunks (as thin as a piece of string), they can't eat their catch. They can only drink small amounts of fluid. That made we wonder -- how do they get the strength and stamina to fly such long distances without eating food?
Q: What did you do next?
Dr. Abe:I found a nest and took it back to the lab for observation. There I discovered that every time something touches the mouth of the larvae, the larvae secretes a clear liquid which adult hornets then drink. I analyzed this liquid and found that the ingredients were consisted of amino acids. The hornet's amino acid contained 17 of the known 20 kinds of amino acid containing protein. It contained not only essential amino acids, but also a lot of non-essential amino acids which were not previously considered important in nutrition.

Q: So after the baby hornet eats, they in turn 'feed' their parents with this clear liquid?
Dr. Abe: Yes. The adult hornets suck on this liquid. Hornets have a lot of fat in their abdomen. This liquid, when taken, converts their fat into energy. This is the source of their remarkable strength and energy.
I named this nutritional liquid "Vespa Amino Acid Mixture" or VAAM® which is now sold as a sports enhancing drink in Japan.

How Diet Amino® Became a Bi-Product of VAAM®
Q: And what about Diet Amino®? How did you make this discovery?
Dr. Abe: While conducting several tests with the hornet liquid, I discovered that among the 17 amino acids that comprise VAAM®, a nuclear part was responsible for fat combustion. Six important amino acids were found to have a much more significant fat burning effect, and these were the elements that we extracted. This is how we formulated Dietary Amino Acid Mixture or Diet Amino® for short.
Diet Amino® has a stronger fat oxidation (or fat burning effect) used with exercise. Actually, it
is exclusively effective for burning fat. Even from the very start of your exercise.
Q: So in Diet Amino®, you retained all the fat burning properties. This makes the product most suitable for dieters and people trying to lose fat. VAAM® on the other hand, is more suitable for athletes?
Dr. Abe: That's right. Most people trying to reduce body fat do not see the need to improve on their sporting endurance. If they want to improve their athletic ability by running longer and faster, for instance, VAAM® is the choice. For fat reduction, it's Diet Amino®. You could say that VAAM® and Diet Amino® are "sister products."
How Diet Amino® Works as a Fat Burner
Q: So how does the fat burning process in Diet Amino® work?
Dr. Abe: Well, there are basically two ways to lose weight -- either reduce energy intake (eat less), or increase energy expenditure (exercise more).
When we exercise or do any physical activity, where do we get energy? We get it from two sources in our body -- carbohydrate (glycogen) and fat. Carbohydrate (glycogen) is our body's primary and preferred energy source. Our body fat on the other hand is our secondary or 'back up' energy resource.
When you exercise, you initially get the energy from glycogen. Body fat is not burned for energy until after about 20 minutes or so.
Q: So that's why we are told in order to lose fat you must exercise for more than 20 minutes.
Dr. Abe: Yes. Fat is stored in abundance by the body but it requires large amounts of oxygen and is generally difficult to convert into energy from the start of a physical activity.
Q: So Diet Amino® speeds up the normal fat burning process?
Dr. Abe: Yes, body fat is used as energy from the very start of exercise. Diet Amino®'s synergistic effect of fat combustion helps activate the hormone sensitive lipase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down stored fat and preparing it for use as energy. I won't go any further as this may sound too scientific so simply put -- Diet Amino® activates the conversion of fat for energy right from the start of exercise.

Q: So how much Diet Amino® would you take daily?
Dr. Abe: One 3g sachet is all you need before exercise. Just mix it with about 3 - 6oz of water and drink it straight away before you exercise.

Q: When is the best time to take Diet Amino®?
Dr. Abe: It is always best to drink Diet Amino® before meals because if we drink on an empty stomach, fat burning is easier. After waking up in the morning is one of the best times to drink Diet Amino®. Then follow with exercise.
Q: Do we really need to exercise to let Diet Amino® work for it's fat burning properties?
Dr. Abe: Even if one of our scientific studies prove that even without exercise Diet Amino® still manages to reduce one's body weight and fat, supplements like Diet Amino® should never be a substitute for eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly.
Q: So Diet Amino® are basically made up of amino acids? How different are there products from all those amino acid products that you see on bodybuilding shops? Can't we just go to the shops and buy those amino acid tablets to lose weight?
Dr. Abe: Good question, but the combination of amino acids is not that simple. Each amino acid is changeable metabolically, and has multiple functions that work independently of each other. When combined in a particular composition, this results in synergistic effects - like fat combustion as in the case of Diet Amino®. When I realized the complex combination of these amino acids, I knew the effect and function would not simply be the sum of the individual amino acids.
Q: What kind of exercise is needed to ensure that the effect of Diet Amino® is achieved to its fullest?
Dr. Abe: There is no particular exercise that is especially prescribed for this. Fat burning will still take place, but of course, minimal exercise or physical activity is required. If you don't have the time to go out and exercise, even doing light housework will do. Moderate walking for 20 - 30 minutes, three times a week is a good exercise plan. Even warming up becomes a fat burning session!
Q: What else are the other positive effects of Diet Amino®?
Dr. Abe: When you take Diet Amino®, the isolation of fatty acids are facilitated so you actually feel less hunger pangs that is why you are able control the intake of food. This is especially helpful for diabetics.
So Diet Amino® is also ideal for diabetics because the accumulation of fat directly affects the amount of insulin produced. For example, when there is an excess of body fats, less insulin is produced. Diet Amino® helps burn the fats so that a healthy amount of insulin is produced, thus preventing diabetes.

Q: I'm sure you've heard about ephedra based weight loss products which is now banned in the US. Are there any adverse effects in using Diet Amino®?
Dr. Abe: We have not found any evidence of adverse side effects in my research studies. Diet Amino® is formulated from high quality amino acids and amino acids are fundamental compounds of life. There would be no life - birth, survival or evolution - if amino acids had harmful side-effects.
Q: Is Diet Amino® only available in Japan?
Dr. Abe: Diet Amino® has been sold in Japan since 1998. But we're starting to sell via the internet then overseas.
Q: Lastly, do you have any other exciting products for the future? If so can you tell us a little bit about them?
